After graduating cum laude from The University of Stellenbosch medical school in 1983, Jaco completed his internship and subsequently trained in Internal Medicine at Tygerberg Hospital where he achieved his specialist certification in Internal Medicine in 1991.

In 1993 he was registered as a Specialist Pulmonologist and consequently appointed as consultant physician at Tygerberg Hospital. He was promoted to the position of senior Specialist Pulmonologist in 1994.

In 1998, Jaco entered full time private practice at Somerset West Medi-clinic where he is senior Pulmonologist and acting head of the respiratory intensive care unit. He has published in peer reviewed journals and is actively involved in clinical research.
